About

With a background education in Chemistry and Neuroscience, laboratory precision and the hidden physiology of the body continues to inspire my work. While the clinical and the creative can be contrasting fields, my work brings science into the art world. While usually depicted as diagrams of skeletal systems and neurological pathways in stoic medical textbook illustrations, my work re-presents anatomy through whimsical cartoon forms and neon colors. By adding elements of humor and unexpected twists, my work subverts traditional expectations and humanizes depictions of the human body by inviting viewers to embrace the darker and malignant secrets of the body.

In addition to the scientifically bizarre, I address aspects of how mass media has changed our reality including the desensitization to violence, the intrusion of commercial images, and technological integration. Inspired by American cartoon characters and the campy violence in 80’s horror films, much of my work involves this iconography in a humorous, yet torturous, way.

I use highly pigmented colors as a guiding force. The candy colors initially create a layer of childlike whimsy to invite viewers into the work before the off-putting subject matter of murderous hearts or exploding eyeballs creeps up. My work functions in a way that if you were to describe the subject matter merely in words, the description might sound entirely gruesome; however, its visual illustration is almost the complete opposite due to the color and cartoon style. It is this dichotomy that forms the foundation of my work.

Without the use of tape or stencils, I have brought my laboratory-like precision into my work through my hard-edge style, and through this aesthetic, I hope to bring order to the chaotic natural world.

Collection of paintings from In Plain Sight at GAZE Modern, 2019.

With a background education in Chemistry and Neuroscience, laboratory precision and the hidden physiology of the body continue to inspire my work. My paintings merge science with art by re-presenting anatomy through stylized forms and hyper-saturated colors to subvert traditional expectations of anatomical diagrams. These larger-than-life paintings expose the inner systems and confront viewers with what it means to be a living body within the context of our current health care system. Landscapes are also used as metaphors to explore the horrors of the pharmaceutical industry, invasion of technology, disregard for the environment, and over-consumption. The superficial whimsy allows for such issues to be addressed with a subtler tone – giving a fantastical glimpse at what our world might become.

It is important to my studio practice to maintain a laboratory-like precision through a graphic, hard-edge style. The technical aspects and the process of creating these forms without the aid of tape or stencils are just as important as the content. The super-flat style allows me to distance the world of my paintings from our reality.
